The Third Story

Somewhere between "God spoke, and it was so" and the "millions and billions of years" of gradualism is the truth. This Third Story, radically different from BOTH the traditional religious and the academic ones, listens to and is educated by our ancient ancestors giving us an account of planetary catastrophe delivered by electrical interactions involving the Earth within relatively recent times.

The challenge to the religious story

This Third Story challenges the religious story that relies upon a mystical interpretation both of myth and an essential misinterpretation of what happened in the ancient times. This "religious" story generally gives us an angry destructive "dictator-God", a God that needs us to placate him and who–in the thinking of Pauline Christendom–ultimately resorts to placating himself by inflicting his wrath upon his own son, and then for those that accept the substitute pretending to only see the righteousness fo the substitute. This "religious" story also gives us variations of Hell and damnation, angels, demons and devils, and a sterile, unromantic and androgynous Heaven, always with "God" being the center of power, control and attention, etc., throughout the balance of eternity. And this only gives half of it: the God of myth was both destructive and saving. This "first story" twisted critical thinking not only from fear but also from unworthy awe, and tangible salvation that has NOT come. It is all so mystical and unfathomable that there is hardly room for intellectual responsibility to apply, and we excuse its absence and substitute for it with what is called  "faith".

This Third Story also challenges the second or modern story that relies upon vast amounts of time to resolve the most fundamental issues of creation, design, life form development, and geological and paleontological formation. It gives us such sensational yet outlandish violations of logic, such as constructs of infinite space, the Big Bang, black holes, dark matter, dark energy, false vacuums, string theory, reified space-time, warped space, time/sequence reversal, etc. Again, it is all so mystical and unfathomable that there is only the need to accept the current fashionable mainstream interpretations and no need for intellectual responsibility. Besides drawing on what can be verified from ancient accounts, this Third Story draws much from modern space exploration, field geology, and the plasma laboratory, and is faithful to a synthesis educated by all the scientific disciplines, including human psychology.

"There really is something wrong with our scientific and cultural environment today, and there is a growing yearning for a deeper understanding...a more clear, more coherent, more unified, and non-contradictory and non-fragmented way of seeing the universe.

...How did human history begin? The evidence may seem too complex for generalization, yet all of history can be stated as two stories. First came mythology, filled with cosmic dramas and celestial wonders. We lived in the presence of the gods. It was the gods who determined the fate of the world, demanding allegiance even as they called humans to sacrifice.

The gods were unpredictable. When angry, they went to war, or they destroyed their own creation. Over time, however, man's quest  for deeper meaning in the myths ignited sparks for spiritual awakening. And it was from these sparks that the great religions arose. But all of the world's religions shared a taproot in mythology, and not one freed itself entirely from the momentum of the first story.

The second story arose from doubt as philosophers, poets, and naturalists began to lose faith in the myths. And some stopped believing in the gods altogether. That was because direct experience under a highly predictable sky gave no support to the archaic myths.

Skepticism inspired closer attention to nature, the essential requirement of science and technology that would change the world. Thus the completion of the second story; rational science rising to vanquish myth and magic.

The above sentiments were taken from the DVD lecture given by David Talbott[*] at the 2013 EU conference titled, Seeking The Third Story.

One challenge for the acceptance of the "Third Story" of recent planetary catastrophe is that it tends to get confused with the religious "Divine catastrophism", and that the proposal of it is a way to bring back that understanding, or at least, to salvage or legitimize the divine authority of sacred scripture. The author of this site is not at all trying to do that!

Externally induced global catastrophism was the general understanding of the world up until about 200 years ago, at which time it was rejected in the West, mostly on psychological grounds with a repudiation of both Papal authority and Biblical fundamentalism. It was replaced by gradualistic and uniformitarian paradigms in the tractable sciences. Geology and biology accepted vast amounts of time–the "millions and billions" of years–as a fundamental foundation for geological and astronomical processes, and for the evolution of life forms, along with a "gravity only" cosmology. All of this essentially precluded any serious consideration of relatively recent planetary catastrophes.: See Origin of Modern Geology

Obstacles to the third story

In the minds of most scholars, scientists and the public, myth is considered to be tantamount to fiction fabricated by ignorant and superstitious ancient people. Along with this new academic thinking, the feasibility and acceptance of "Velikovskian" planetary catastrophe and the Saturnian Reconstruction faced almost insurmountable obstacles and resistance.

Obstacles to acceptance of catastrophism

Not the least of these obstacles, one such impediment is fundamentally psychological. The psychologist Velikovsky tried to deal with it by diagnosing Mankind as collectively suffering from post traumatic stress disorder, amnesia and denial. Not only were these ancient catastrophes incredibly destructive and excruciatingly awful, but the implications are generally reprehensible for us regarding whatever agency controls the universe.

It matters not much if you are atheistic, Christian, Jew, Hindu, Buddhist or Muslim etc., accepting the Saturnian scenario and its breakup in the "Great Deluge" will trouble and disrupt your belief system in a major way. If you think that the Biblical "God" is in control of things on earth, he not only once drowned almost the entire population of the earth out of anger, but continued to wreak his vengeance on and destroy his "children" with almost unfathomable violent upheavals, massive cascades of rocky material from above, and widespread rains of burning with "fire and brimstone". If you don't believe in "God", and think that "stuff just happens" in the universe, you are compelled to realize on some level that the universe is NOT benevolent, but can be frightfully dangerous and evil in a way that we are essentially helpless to do anything about.

An added factor is that for a couple of thousand years or so, the earth has suffered only lesser or more minor catastrophes. Even though the earth has icurred documented cometary catastrophes since the planetary ones, most of the threatening comets have gotten swept up by the other planets or destroyed by the sun, and we have gotten complacent and have buried even the memory and awareness of these later catastrophes. The mindset is: It all happened to other people a long time ago. Maybe the final reticence factor in accepting the "Third Story" is apathetic denial. What does it matter? So what?–if we can't do anything about it anyway!

Given the above factors, and that planetary catastrophism is going to be entertained only by people with strong stomachs, it was felt that it had to be presented as "scientifically" and dynamically feasible. And in a gravity dominated or "gravity only" cosmos, it is NOT feasible. Hence, it was decided that for the Third Story to be defensibly, effectively presented and reasonably considered, the astrophysical foundation called the Electric Universe (EU) had to be prominently proposed and primarily presented before the emphasis could be laid upon planetary catastrophe.

What has actually happened since Velikovsky published Worlds in Collision in 1950, and a renewed effort over the last two dozen years to bring the Third Story into the public domain, is a version of mission creep. Even among the avid followers of the renewed effort, the interest and emphasis is upon the EU foundation, the science, and not the far more important part dealing with the implications of the ancient solar system rearrangement for so many aspects of human origins, history, psychology, destiny, etc,. There is a vocal contingent of the public that is enamored with the EU theory and thinking, but wish the program would drop that discrediting "myth crap".

Aspects and premises of the Third Story, the more true and valid story:

  1. The developing third story strives to be intellectually responsible, relying totally upon being rational, logical and reasonable, and, even though it does not agree with the paradigm and many of the conclusions of modern science, being entirely faithful to the scientific method and valid scientific findings: See Misc Ancient Myth Material, Saturn-Jupiter Material, Venus-Mars Material

  2. The popular take on ancient myth is that it is fiction or fantasy, stories that don't reflect any actual reality, or  at least only faintly and remotely. While it is true in the era of mythmaking that human imagination DID run wild under the influence of extraordinary and devastating natural events, the ancients did NOT fabricate the events, but rather became intellectually irresponsible in their interpretations, primarily by anthropomorphizing the planets into semi-human gods. Yet, we have to deal with both this mythologizing AND the underlying reality of these intensely traumatizing events: See Why Care About Myth?
  3. The third story finds significant support from the findings of the modern space exploration effort. Celestial mechanics along with the planetary rotation periods, their axial tilts, their atmospheric components, some current  or periodic phenomena, and especially their electrically scarred surfaces give a solid and compelling verification of a recent solar system rearrangement: See The Lightning Scarred Planet Mars

In its reconstruction of ancient "prehistoric" times, the Third Story relies significantly upon the comparative mythology method, where the focus is upon those dramatic facets and aspects that are held in common by several diverse cultures. This CANNOT be emphasized too much! Understanding the Third Story is CRUCIAL to building a valid picture of what has happened to the human race in the past. It affects almost every concept of how we got to where we are now, where we are going, and where we COULD go.

Most theological concepts are also heavily influenced by misconception introduced through the ancient myth, and now modern "science". Without being grounded in this knowledge of ancient planetary catastrophe and the perspective that it gives, one is simply in danger of being lost in the fog and maze of the traditional religious story and/or the modern secular replacement mythology. This is WHY so much of this material has been included on this site.
